Quetiapine (Seroquel) is an anti-psychotic used to treat symptoms of schizophrenia, acute mania, depression, disorders associated with problems with impulse control and anxiety, behavioral disturbances in Parkinson's disease, and for bipolar maintenance.
Quetiapine is also being studied for treating alcohol dependence.
Quetiapine works by affecting the actions of certain chemicals in the brain known as neurotransmitters.
Side Effects
Common side effects include: constipation, dizziness and lightheadedness including fainting when getting up from a lying or sitting position, drowsiness, indigestion, and weight gain.
Less common side effects include: increased risk for diabetes and dyslipidemia, dry mouth, dyspepsia, tachycardia, orthostatic hypotension, abdominal pain, abnormal vision, decrease in appetite, decreased strength and energy, feeling of fast or irregular heartbeat, headache, and stuffy or runny nose.
Please consult your physician immediately if you experience these symptoms. Do not operate heavy equipment while using this medication.
It is recommended that you avoid the use of alcohol completely when taking this drug.
