Frequently Asked Questions

Is Femara for breast cancer, or fertility?

Short Answer

Letrozole (Femara) is officially a breast cancer medication.

Long Answer

Letrozole (Femara) is used to treat certain types of breast cancer in postmenopausal women and is in a class of drugs known as aromatase inhibitors (anti-estrogen). Letrozole slows or stops the growth of cancer cells by decreasing the amount of estrogen produced. The use of this medication for any other purpose is not supported by the manufacturer. There is a potential for birth defects and miscarriages when it is used off-label as a fertility drug.

There are several types of therapy that affect hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer:

Selective Estrogen-Receptor Modulators (SERM)
e.g. tamoxifen
Aromatase inhibitors
e.g. letrozole
Estrogen-Receptor Downregulators (ERD)
e.g. fulvestrant
Ovarian ablation (shutdown) and removal
