Frequently Asked Questions

What is beclomethasone ?

Short Answer

It is a drug used in the treatment of Asthma, COPD and other allergic conditions.

Long Answer

Beclomethasone (beck low meth uh sown)

Beclomethasone is a steroid. It is the main ingredient found in two different types of medication - Nasal Sprays: Beconase AQ, Vancenase, and inhalers; Beclomethasone and Qvar. It helps to prevent the release of substances in the body, also known as allergies and this can cause inflammation.

As an inhaler, it helps decrease inflammation in the lungs. It is used to prevent asthma, and COPD attacks, not to control them. It will not treat an attack once it has begun. The reason being is it does not work fast enough to reverse the symptoms.

Long term use of a steroid can lead to Osteoporosis (bone loss). People who should be concerned are smokers, those who don't get enough exercise, those who don't get enough Vitamin D or Calcium in their daily diet, or those who have a family history of Osteoporosis. Speak with your Doctor about the potential risks of Osteoporosis.

As a nasal spray, it is used for the treatment of Rhinitis and Sinusitis by decreasing inflammation in the nasal passages. It is used to treat symptoms of allergies such as sneezing, itching, and runny or stuffy nose. Also, it is used to prevent the return of nasal polyps. It works best if person blow their nose before administering the medication. This allows more medication on the tissue.

Additional Information

More information from the Mayo Clinic:

Inhalation corticosteroids are cortisone-like medicines. They are used to help prevent the symptoms of asthma. When used regularly every day, inhalation corticosteroids decrease the number and severity of asthma attacks. However, they will not relieve an asthma attack that has already started.

More information from Drugs.com:

Do not use beclomethasone inhalation to treat an asthma attack that has already begun. It will not work fast enough to reverse your symptoms. Use another, faster-acting inhalation medication to treat an asthma attack.

More information from Medline Plus:

Beclomethasone is used to prevent wheezing, shortness of breath, and breathing difficulties caused by severe asthma and other lung diseases. Beclomethasone is in a class of medications called corticosteroids. It works by reducing swelling in the airways.
