What is COPD?

Short Answer

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is a chronic (long-term) disease of the lungs. It is often caused by smoking and usually consists of chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

Long Answer

While men over 40 generally have a greater risk for COPD, it can reach into all segments of the population. It is also known as Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (COLD).

 

Treatment of COPD may include:

  • Bronchodilator medications (drugs that relax and open air passages in the lungs)
  • Oxygen
  • Terbutaline (Brethine, Bricanyl)
  • Albuterol (Proventil)
  • Lpratropium Bromide (Atrovent)
  • Tiotropium Bromide (Spiriva)
  • Methylprednisolone (Solu-Medrol, Depo-Medrol, Adlone)
