Risedronate (Actonel/Risofos) is used to treat or prevent osteoporosis (thinning of bone tissue and loss of bone density). Risedronate is also used to treat Paget's disease of the bone.
Long Answer
Risedronate (rih SED ro nayt) sodium tablets were approved by the U.S. FDA on March 27, 1998 to treat Paget's (paj-ets) disease of the bone, postmenopausal osteoporosis, and glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis in men and women.
Actonel and Fosamax are both effective treatments for age-related osteoporosis. Some people using medicines similar to risedronate have developed osteonecrosis (bone loss) in the jaw.
