Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between rotacaps and a diskus?

Short Answer

Rotacaps are individual doses; a diskus is a dispenser containing multiple doses.

Long Answer

There are a variety of inhalation devices used to deliver medication for the treatment of lung diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Two of those devices are the Rotahaler and the diskus. Both deliver pre-measured dosages of a micronized powder but they operate differently.

The diskus is a round, plastic dispenser that generally contains 60 doses of medication. Individual doses are contained in a blister strip inside the device. To take the medication, the patient initiates a "trigger" action with the diskus that pierces one of the blisters, making the powder available to be inhaled through the diskus mouthpiece. The diskus has a counter that displays the number of doses remaining. The trigger action advances the counter to the next lowest number.

On the other hand, the Rotahaler is simply a dispensing device and does not come pre-loaded with medication. Instead, each dose of powdered medication is stored inside a capsule called a rotacap. More than one type of drug is available in rotacap form. To take the medication, the patient loads one rotacap into the Rotahaler and twists the base which opens the rotacap. The powdered dose is inhaled through the mouthpiece of the Rotahaler.

The Rotahaler is re-usable whereas the diskus is discarded once all its medication is used up. The number of rotacaps available varies, depending on the prescription. The Advair diskus, for example, comes in three different strengths which are listed as 100/50, 250/50 and 500/50. The first number represents the number of micrograms of fluticasone propionate and the second number means 50 micrograms of salmeterol. All three strengths provide 60 doses per diskus. Flovent is another example of a drug that is available in diskus form with 60 doses.
